Description
These top-down ankle socks feature a pattern of crossed stitches across the top of the instep that mimics the look of a chain link fence. Instructions are included for working the cables without a cable needle.
Choose your size based on the measurement around your foot at its widest point, at the base of your big toe. The length is completely customizable, with instructions for customization in the notes section.
Notes:
Heel turn: When working the established slip and knit pattern where instructed, be sure not to slip two stitches in a row. In these cases, slip the first stitch as instructed and knit the next stitch to be slipped.
Feel free to sub in your own favorite toe or heel, keeping in mind that, as written, the heel adds 1.25( 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3.5) inches to the length and height, and the toe adds 1(1.5, 2, 2.5, 3) inches to the length.
As written, these socks will fit Kids 7-11(Kids 11-6/Womens 3-6/Mens 6-8, Womens 6-9/Mens 8-10, Womens 9-12/Mens 10-12, Mens 12-14), but the length is easily customizable. I recommend adding or subtracting a full repeat in the instep (Rounds 1-12) and always ending with a half-repeat (Rounds 1-6), but you can also choose to end your instep at any even round. That will just leave you with open" diamonds going into the toe instead of closing" them.
Glossary:
Cable 1/1 right - Taking the right hand needle in front of the first stitch on the left hand needle, knit the second stitch on the left needle through the front loop, then knit the first stitch on the left needle. Slip both stitches from the left hand needle. Alternatively, you can use a cable needle to hold the first stitch behind the needles, knit 1 stitch from the left needle, then knit the stitch from the cable needle.
Cable 1/1 left - Taking the right hand needle behind the first stitch on the left hand needle, knit the second stitch on the left needle through the back loop, then knit the first stitch on the left needle. Slip both stitches from the left hand needle. Alternatively, you can use a cable needle to hold the first stitch in front of the needles, knit 1 stitch from the left needle, then knit the stitch from the cable needle.
