Description
This crochet octopus pattern is designed to be donated for babies in the NICU! These octopuses provide comfort and security to premature babies, thanks to their spiral tentacles that resemble the umbilical cord, reducing stress and making the newborns feel more at ease, while also preventing them from pulling on the medical tubing.

Materials:
100% cotton yarn
3.0 crochet hook
Stitch markers (optional, I just use paper clips)
Hypoallergenic stuffing
Scissors
Darning needle (for weaving in tail and embroidering face which is optional)

Skill Level: Advanced beginner
Skills Required: Magic ring, single crochet, increase, decrease, double crochet, slip stitch, and chain stitch.

Pattern Features:
No-sew (unless you want to embroider on a face)
Ideal size for most NICUs
Quick pattern

Donation Safety Information

Yarn:

Remember to use 100% cotton yarn, preferably not mercerized, and with no fluff. Here are some reasons why this is the best kind to use:

1. Safe for sensitive skin
Preemies have very delicate skin, so only soft and non-irritating materials are allowed.
Cotton yarn is smooth and natural and less likely to cause rashes or allergic reactions.
Synthetic yarns, like acrylic or polyester, can be scratchy or irritate skin.

2. Hygienic & Washable
All preemie octopuses must be machine-washable at high temperatures (usually 60°C / 140°F or higher) to meet hospital hygiene standards.
100% cotton yarn can handle frequent sterilization and washing.
Synthetic yarns often melt, stretch, or degrade in hot water.

3. Keeps Shape and Texture
Cotton yarn holds its shape well and provides the right tension and bounce.
Fluffy or stretchy yarns can become misshapen or have loose fibers that pose a choking hazard.

Note: Many hospitals require you use yarn that is OEKO-TEX certified, or tested for harmful substances.

Stitches:

Here are some reasons why you need to use tight stitches:

1. Prevent Stuffing from Leaking Out
Loose stitches can allow the polyester fiberfill to poke through.
Escaping stuffing poses a choking hazard or can irritate a baby's skin or respiratory system.
NICU preemies often have underdeveloped immune systems, and exposure to loose fibers is risky.

2. Prevent Baby Fingers from Getting Caught
NICU babies have tiny, delicate fingers.
Loose stitches can create gaps or holes, where little fingers or medical tubes could get caught.
Tight stitches create a smooth, secure surface with no risk of entanglement or snagging.

3. Support Sterilization and Washing
Hospitals may sterilize or machine wash donated octopuses before giving them to babies.
Loose stitches can stretch or deform during washing.
Tight, dense stitches help the toy keep its shape and integrity through multiple washings.

4. Ensure a Firm, Safe Shape
Tight stitches help maintain the structure of the octopus, especially the head.
A well-shaped, firmly stuffed head offers the baby comfort and tactile stimulation.

Stuffing:

1. Use Hypoallergenic, Washable Stuffing
Material
Use 100% polyester fiberfill, like Poly-Fil or similar hypoallergenic, washable brands.
No scraps, beads, or foam: Only use purpose-made stuffingnot yarn scraps or other materials that might break down or harbor bacteria.
Firm stuffing: The head must be firmly and evenly stuffed to hold its shape and prevent babies from pushing fingers inside.

Other Information:

Do not use safety eyes! They're a choking hazard and can be very dangerous.

For information on the size, check out the measurements section for the pattern.

Remember to always follow your local NICU's guidelines for donations!
