Description
One of my favorite parts of the spooky season is all of the strange creatures of tales and lore that come with it. Cryptids in particular have had a bit of a resurgence in recent years: it’s not uncommon to come across enthusiasts of the Jersey Devil, Bigfoot, or the Loch-Ness monster. Mothman, however, is the most popular by far, inspiring all sorts of Mothman art ranging from the terrifying to the adorable to the just plain #aesthetic. I wanted to add a new take with my own Halloween amigurumi pattern.
There are plenty of imaginings of Mothman, but certain visual features occur in most renderings of this cryptid: bold red eyes, protruding ears, and, of course, black wings. It would have been fun to go for a creepy detailed Mothman plush, but I decided that these main features would be spooky enough on their own and opted for a cute and minimalist Mothman crochet pattern instead. Plus, I have yet to see any amigurumi that wasn’t at least a little bit adorable!
Additionally, I wanted this Mothman amigurumi pattern to work up quickly and be visually striking. Anyone who’s worked with black yarn knows how hard it is to see, so I designed a little Mothman pattern with a clear outline, taking a little inspiration from Batman. Thus, the final yarn Mothman had big dramatic wings, defined ears, and a tiny little body!
If anything in this little cryptid amigurumi pattern is confusing, I created a crochet video tutorial for extra guidance. If you still have questions after watching, please reach out to me: @janateecraftily on social media or send an email to janateecraftily@gmail.com. And even if you don’t have questions, I’d love to see any Mothman plushie you make with this Halloween crochet pattern!
