ABOUT THIS PATTERN
The late 80s and early 90s saw the birth of pagers and basic mobile phones from which came the birth of text speak that we're so familiar with today... apart from one exception, LOL in the 80s mean't Lots of Love!
This pattern is for a fun 80s/90s inspired colourwork granny square featuring popular text phrases and acronyms, that can be used individually or in combo with other Hookanory Con-Text Granny Squares to create messages on wall art, accessories and wearables! The possibilities are endless!
SKILLS
You will need to be able to do basic crochet stitches and change colour confidently for this project, which is why it is rated Level 3 - Intermediate in the Happy Humpty project level ratings, (which relate to the Craft Yarn Council industry standards for project rating). This means that this project "may include involved stitch patterns, color work, and/or shaping."
There is a chart for this square available either as an interactive Ribblr chart or as a PDF download, which you will need to refer to for all colour-work.
INSPIRATION
Originally designed for Granny Square Day 2023, hosted by Simply Crochet Magazine, and appeared in their GSD granny square supplement.
This late 80s early 90's Memphis graphic inspired square was my response the the theme of celebration! Um...quite literally!
I had recently designed an 80's inspired Memphis Mix Tape Laptop Bag, for the same magazine, (which I will also be releasing here soon) and so had these yarns and colours in mind. As always when I design something, it sparks of loads of other ideas, so YAY! And them of course I had to design a whole bunch more words so you can mix and match them in your projects!
I am interested in language and as an (unashamed) Gen Xer, I can remember the days when people use pagers, and non-smart phones and texting took soooooo long because each button had 3 letters on it and you had to keep clicking it to type the letter you wanted....urrrgh! Hence txt spk wz bn. Lol. Sorry, not sorry, about that!
WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY SQUARE?
You can use your YAY! Con-Text granny square as a component for loads of cute and fun projects, like a mini coin purse, tote bag, pencil case, wall art or even a scarf!
YOU WILL NEED
Ricorumi (100% Cotton DK, 25g/57.5m)
10g White (001)
Small quantity (approx 5g) of each as follows:
Raspberry (013)
Yellow (006)
Blue (032)
Green (049)
Or
DK (light worsted/8ply) Yarn in any 5 shades.
HOOK = 3mm (US D/3)
HINT - A 3mm hook and 100% cotton yarn will result in a dense sturdy fabric, which is great for bags and purses, however if you want to make a wearable garment such as a sweater or scarf, I suggest using a larger hook size to create a softer fabric with more drape. Remember, a larger hook size will affect the overall measurements of the square so it is always wise to make a tension square first before embarking on a larger project!
TENSION/GAUGE
25 sts and 24 rows measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over double crochet using a 3mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension.
MEASUREMENTS
Approx 11x11cm / 4.3x4.3 inches including the border.
MORE WORDS
I will be adding to the library of text quotes regularly and making a bundle that includes instructions and tutorial photos to make a range of small homewares and accessories, so you can have fun creating your own slogans and messages within your projects!
EARLY BIRD BUNDLE BARGAIN!
Grab the Con Text Granny Square Bundle HERE and get access to the whole continually expanding library of Con-Text granny squares for the early bird into price! WHAAT? Well basically if you buy a bundle or a pattern in @ribblr, every time the designer edits the pattern you automatically get the updates too!
HOW IT WORKS
So that means that if for example, you buy the bundle when it's only got 3 pattern charts, and no project making instructions for a super bargain price, as I add extra patterns to the bundle, (and increase the bundle price accordingly), you will get the updated new patterns FOR FREE, whoop whoop!
WHY OFFER THIS?
Well, it's pretty simple, I'm new to this platform though I have been writing patterns for a while and have had them published in magazines such as Simply Crochet Magazine and Crochet Foundry and on the Hobbycraft website; but all my colour-work crochet designs are made using Stitch Fiddle, and at the moment you can't just copy and paste them into the Ribbuild chart builder.
So basically I'm going to have to re-draw each chart in Ribbuild, which is going to take a while! So my offer is to encourage some small sales and followers here in Ribblr while I'm starting out, and the reward for your awesome support is that you'll get the ongoing expanding bundle way cheaper than those that buy it later on. Kind of like a return on your investment and encouragement of my designs!
