Start with the basics
To start crocheting you need to understand the basics. We use patterns (essentially like an instructional guide) to make things. And we use yarn and a hook (yes, only one for crochet!) to create stitches. That is it!
As for yarn: first of all - do not start with a fine or very thin yarn - try to aim for a medium weight yarn in a light color - black yarn is a little tricky to work with as a beginner. Find a matching hook (check the pattern instructions - see below).
As for stitches - start with the basics: chain and single crochet and slip knot or magic ring. Do not jump into anything complicated. Once that feels okay, everything else is manageable.
Pick a beginner pattern
I look for clear materials, simple stitches, minimal color changes and photos of the finished project. You want a pattern that is designed for beignners. A small win beats a huge first project that lives forever in a tote bag. That should be your aim!
Use stitch help
When a stitch name makes sense in my brain but my hands disagree, I use stitch tutorials. On Ribblr you can simply click on any stitch to watch a video tutorial. Watching one clean demo can save a lot of frogging! Oh yes- frogging is the act of undoing your work because you made a mistake.
Track as you go
One of the cool things about Ribblr is you can track your progress by tapping each line. Line tracking, row tracking and quick notes help you pick a project up again without doing a full recount like you're auditing your own work.
