How to choose a beginner craft pattern

When I was new, I thought the best beginner pattern meant smallest and cutest. That is definitely not true. The best beginner crochet, knitting or sewing pattern is the one with clear materials and steps, realistic skills (as in not too many complicated stitches) and enough photos or media that you don't end up staring at your project like it owes you an explanation.

Choose by skill, not just style

I choose beginner patterns by looking at the skill level - this is usually indicated on the pattern listing page. Remember - clarity first, style second. That means you need to look for basic stitches and not too many of them. You want clear photos and a project size you can finish before motivation wanders off.

Check the pattern page in details

Before I commit, I scan the pattern page - look at the materials, gauge or measurements, finished size, notes, media and designer information. A good beginner pattern page answers the obvious questions up front. Plus - look for reviews and finished objects from other makers.

Complete beginner? pick the right first craft project

My go to craft for a starter would be crochet - simple rows, one hook. Try a hat or scarf. Same if you are going for knitting - scarves, hats, dishcloths are relatively simple. The goal is to finish the project.

Use free patterns to explore

Free patterns are a great way to try a new craft (or pattern, or even a stitch) without pressure. Ultimately, one small free project will teach you more than a big project you don't finish. Good luck!
