Ribblr vs PDFs and static pattern sites

PDFs and static pattern sites are great for browsing and downloading. But once I'm actually making, I want the pattern, tools, media and tracking in one place - not wandering off into separate tabs. That's the gap Ribblr tries to fill.

Quick comparison

I keep this mental checklist handy when I'm choosing between a PDF crochet pattern and an interactive ePattern:

What working with a PDF is like

10 years ago, I used PDF marketplaces to get my patterns. They're great for inspiration too. The catch is that a PDF is just an image. It doesn't know your row, repeat, size choice, notes, language, unit... or where you last stopped! So you end up managing all that yourself.
And not even that, having to deal with the fact that each PDF pattern looks different is a challenge.

Where Ribblr is different

Ribblr is built as a home for crafters to get discover, create, and connect. All patterns come in a modern, interactive format (aka Ribblr ePattern) which includes progress tracking, notes, doodles, translation, unit conversion, smart sizing, photos, videos, audio, charts, built-in stitch tutorials... and the list goes on!
Your progress is synced across devices - so the idea is you can carry your entire library of patterns with you and all patterns, regardless of who designed them, follow the same format and have the same tools. Essentially making each pattern fully yours - your language, your size, your units.

How PDFs still fit

I don't think PDFs are useless. On Ribblr, designers can attach PDF files for cut-outs, non-interactive charts, or printable references where needed. If you need a printable file, I always check the listing first since PDF access is optional.

For designers

If you're designing, Ribbuild is a free pattern pattern builder that handles layout and helps with translation, cm/in conversion, smart sizing, tutorials, media, social video links, optional PDFs and interactive charts. It's built to make patterns clearer, not just prettier. But just as important, it's designed to protect your designs. PDFs are unfortunately easy to re-distribute and so piracy is on the rise. Ribblr ePattern only belong to the account holder that acquires it and cannot be downloaded, printed or otherwise transferred without your permission.

How to choose

If you mainly need a file, and don't care for translation, sizes, cm/inch conversion - a traditional PDF pattern may be enough. If you want the pattern to be fully yours and totally customizable, with smart sizing, accessibility tools, translation, unit conversion - Ribblr is the better fit.
