Description
Dual Dualities celebrates the beauty of opposites with light and dark colored yarn of differing weights worked together. The cowl is worked flat starting with a field of linen with the yarns held together, then switching it up to a large field of beautiful mosaic, finishing with stripes before seaming the two ends together.
Barbara Walker coined the term “mosaic knitting" and invented many, many mosaic patterns, two of which
are used in this cowl. With mosaic knitting you only need to know how to knit a stitch, and how to slip a stitch - that’s it! The mosaic patterns are formed simply by slipping stitches, always purlwise, and always with yarn held to the WS side of the work. That is to say that on RS rows the yarn will be held to the back (wyib), and on WS rows the yarn will be held to the front (wyif).
This pattern is worked in Stockinette Mosaic so you will be knitting and slipping stitches on RS and purling and slipping stitches on WS.
Mosaic patterns are typically charted rather than written, so you’ll follow the colors in the chart.
Each horizontal row of squares on the chart represents two rows of knitting, the RS and WS. The right side row begins at the RH edge. The first square is the color yarn you will be knitting for those 2 rows, knitting the first square colored stitches, and slipping the other colored stitches. Each color is used for two full rows at a time, the right side and the wrong side. The other color just waits its turn at the beginning of the RS row. When working the WS row, rather than reading the chart, simply read your work, purling the stitches you just knit, and slipping the stitches you just slipped. After you’ve finished the WS row and turned your work back around so the RS is facing you, simply drop the strand you’ve been working with towards you and pick up the other color behind it. Staying consistent with this change will result in a beautiful edge.
