Description
About Ginan
Australia's First Nations peoples have studied the night sky for milennia, making them the world's earliest astronomers. For Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island peoples, astronomical knowledge informed navigation and predicted the weather.
In one instance of perceiving an astronomical phenomenon, the Boorong clan of the Wergaia people incorporated into their oral traditions a star that had become bright and 'angry'. Contemporary research matches this with the Great Eruption of the star Eta Carinae in the 1840s.
Ginan is one of four officially named stars whose name is drawn from Australian cultures. Although the word 'ginan' comes from the Wardaman people, I designed the jumper as an homage to a starry night in Dharawal country. The Dharawal people are the First Nations people of the land upon which I live.
By using assigned pooling yarn, the bobble placements are star-like in their randomness.
Pattern Notes
Ginan is designed to be made with assigned colour pooling yarn, which is a type of variegated that yarn that typically features two different colours. The base colour is complemented by a section of a contrast colour. When choosing your yarn, look for one with a section of contrasting colour at least 18cm long.
Because the bobbles are dictated by the yarn, bobble placement is not indicated in the pattern. All stitches in this pattern are Tunisian simple stitch (tss), with a bobble worked when reaching the contrast colour.
All bobbles are worked on the forward pass, which allows the contrast colour to show in the return pass.
Additional rows are added to the back of the jumper at the end of the yoke to bring the back of the next up higher than the front.
