Welcome to Missing Moretta!
This piece was inspired by the Women of the Italian Renaissance specifically those who wore Moretta Masks. The Moretta was a small, oval shaped mask worn by the Venetian Women during the 17th/18th Century, with the aim of creating an alluring and mysterious illusion amongst higher social classes during extravagant parties and soirees.
Morettas were generally made of dark velvet, and the user held a button in between their teeth so as to keep the mask from falling off. That being said, the design of this piece is somewhat ironic. The Latin word below our mistress translates to 'Missing'.
Alongside creating thoughts of a sweeping narrative,
where perhaps the young woman was last seen wearing her Moretta and is now lost in the city of Venice, I wanted to also highlight the curious concept of the mask itself.
Few paintings exist of Women donning such a fashion statement, but there is an eerie quality of beauty about them, such as comes with all Renaissance works of art.
I am completely thankful to those reading and supporting my patterns. That being said, please enjoy, and make sure to make yourself seen and heard throughout this world, wherever your passions may lie.
