Description
Description
Tāniko cowls is a design where YOU get to chose which stitch pattern you wish to use for your special cowl. There are five different stitch motifs in this pattern, each based off of the main design types found in tāniko (traditional Māori weaving).
Aronui: The triangle shape is the prominent motif with alternating bases. The design refers to the pursuit of knowledge about the natural world.
Aramoana (pathway of the sea): consists of horizontal zigzags. The design suggests that the ocean and other waterways provide pathways to many destinations.
Kumara: sweet potato leaves. Though the leaves are edible, it was the root of the potato that was an important staple food in Māori cuisine. It is associated with the Māori god Rongomātāne, the god of peace. The sample shown in this pattern features this motif.
Pātikitiki: patterns with a single diamond as the dominant motif. Pātikitiki is a flounder fish, a common food source for the Māori. This motif represents good fortune, abundance and wealth.
Whakarua Kopito (a point where people or events cross): consists of vertically paired diamond shapes, a reminder that change occurs at such meeting points.
