Knit your new baby an adorable cardigan with faux cable detail on the lower part,
with a matching beanie hat. You can add a pom pom, or keep it simple.

The jumper is knit in one piece from the bottom up, then split into the shoulder pieces.
The little hat has the same all-over faux cabled pattern. (The cables are easy to make, and consists of four rows repeated - no cable needle required! )

Notes:
The cables are faux ( It's simply a stitch pattern that looks like cables it's easier that it looks! )
I usually knit using a circular needle, as I find it faster, but I knit back and forth, not in the round, so you can use either circular needles or straight needles and do the same.
The cardigan is knitted in one piece from the bottom up to the armhole shaping

ABBREVIATIONS:
K= Knit / / P= Purl / St= stitch
Stocking stitch= one row plain, one row purl
YO = yarn over ie wrap the yarn over your needle
Sl1 = slip the next stitch from your left needle to the right needle without knitting it.
PSS0 = Pass slipped stitch over.
