The top is constructed by making the front portion, then one of the sides, and followed by the other to ensure more of a "try it on as you go" style pattern, all while using simplistic stitches and consistent color change to achieve the trendy checkered/colorblock design.

The bulk of the top uses an alternative stitch to the double crochet (US terminology) known as the "linked/connected double crochet", where it shares the same height/speed of make as the double crochet yet provides more coverage and stretch to the project.
