Description
This pattern includes both options - the original PDF pattern by KnittyBae and a converted interactive version, so you can choose the format that works best for you!
Presenting a crochet pattern for Checkmate Sweater by Knittybae. This crochet pattern is made by alternating between solid and mesh square squares that creates beautiful checkered design. With this pattern you have two ribbing options that you can chose from: crocheted or knitted.
The pattern is designed in three double sizes: XS/S, M/L, and XL/XXL, but it can also be worked as a made to measure design. If the listed sizes don't match your measurements, you can customize each part by following the helpful customization notes throughout the pattern.
This pattern is provided in English and uses American crochet shorthand/abbreviations. This document spans 41 pages and includes instructive images to further help you pursuit your goal result.
Recommended Skill Level: Advanced Beginner and above.
Pattern uses following crochet stitches: double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), sl st (slip stitches).
CONSTRUCTION OF THE SWEATER
The Checkmate Sweater is worked flat from bottom up and constructed from two body panels (front and back, both with neck shaping) and two sleeves. The front and back panels are shaped differently at the neckline, with the front shaped earlier than the back so the sweater sits more naturally on the body.
After both panels are complete and the necklines are shaped, they're joined together at the shoulders. The sleeves are then added directly onto the body and worked flat. Once finished, the sides of the sleeves and sweater are seamed tog using the mattress stitch from the Right Side (RS) to achieve a clean, polished look.
To complete the sweater, add ribbing either crocheted or knitted, depending on your preference to the sleeves, neckline, and bottom hem for a finished touch.
MATERIALS:
- CROCHET HOOK 4 mm / UK 8 / US G-6
- LIGHT WEIGH YARN (no. 3), DK or Light Worsted
- SCISSORS
- TAPE MEASURE
- STITCH MARKERS
- TAPESTRY NEEDLE (for weaving in ends)
For knitted ribbing (optional):
- KNITTING NEEDLES 4 mm / UK 8 / US 6 (circular)
YARN RECOMMENDATIONS:
- You can use any yarn of your choice, such as cotton, wool or acrylic (you can use blends: e.g. 60% cotton, 40% acrylic etc.),
- Keep in mind that your yarn choice can affect the appearance of the checkered pattern. I recommend making a small sample swatch before starting to ensure that the yarn type or color doesn't soften or fade the checkered effect used in this design,
- To achieve the best result, I highly recommend using the specified yarn weight (Light / no. 3) with a 4 mm crochet hook. This will help maintain the correct stitch tension and ensure the checkered texture is clearly visible.
e.g. For beige sample sweater in size M/L I've used single strand of yarn: Light weight (no. 3). I've used DROPS's Cotton Light yarn 50g / 105 m in shade 21 Light Beige (in total approx. 1260 m)
Please feel free to share your finished garment on Social Media (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest), tagging me @knittybae and using the hashtag #knittybae and #checkmatesweater.
