Crochet your own baby griffin with this original crochet pattern! Gunther has textured wings, sculpted ears, and eagle-inspired feet (a bit chubby, but he's just a baby), making him a fun intermediate project for crocheters who appreciate unique amigurumi designs.

Assembly Options

When I first designed this pattern, it involved quite a bit of assembly. Thanks to the helpful feedback from my pattern testers, I was inspired to include an alternative, lower-sew option for the arms, legs, and toes.

The original version of the pattern requires sewing the following pieces onto the body:

Ears
Nose
Wings
Arms
Legs
Back paws
Toes
Tail
2 Tail curls
1 Head curl
6 feathers

For the arms, legs, and toes, you can choose between two construction methods:

Option 1: Original Version

This version follows the original design and includes separate pieces that are assembled afterward.

You will crochet:

2 arms
8 front toes
2 back legs
2 back paws
8 back toes

These pieces are sewn together and then attached to the body.

Option 2: Low-Sew Version

This version simplifies the assembly by using bobble stitches to create the toes directly on the legs.

You will only crochet:

2 arms
2 legs
Tail

With this option, the only sewing required is attaching the finished arms and legs to the body. In addition to the ears, curls, wings, tail, and feathers. No separate toes or back paws need to be made.

While there are tons of beautiful Griffin patterns out there in the crochet world, I decided to craft my own. To add a little razzle dazzle, I have and will continue to include a storyline for all my creations to send the magic to you and your family. Not to mention, drop hints and characters for future critters I decide to make. It might be a while before I publish more, but there are definitely many more already in the making from the Furfeather Forest. With that said, let me introduce you to "Gunther the Grumpy Griffin." Meet Gunther...

No one can pinpoint how Gunther ended up in the Furfeather Forest all by himself.

Some say a storm caused his egg to tumble from a nest high in the mountains. Others believe he simply wandered off before learning that flying is much easier than walking. Gunther has always been a bit hardheaded.

One thing is certain...Gunther has a grumpy side.

The Furfeather creatures do everything they can to cheer him up. The Squirrelbits bring him shiny acorns, the Skossums gather soft moss for his nest, and the Crowjays sing to him every morning.

Gunther is not impressed.

One day, a tiny Piranhacorn swam right up to the edge of Gunther's nest.

"Perfect," Gunther thought. "Lunch."

He reached into the water with his talons, scooped up the tiny fish, and opened his beak. Before he could take a bite, the little Piranhacorn smiled and asked, "Will you be my friend?"

Gunther froze.

"That's...not how this is supposed to work."

The confused griffin shrugged and tried to eat him anyway.

CHOMP!

"OUCH!"

The tiny Piranhacorn had bitten Gunther right on the nose!

Needless to say, Gunther found something else to eat that day.

The funny thing is...the little Piranhacorn never left.

He follows Gunther absolutely everywhere, chatting nonstop and getting into trouble. Gunther insists they're not friends, grumbles every chance he gets, and pretends the little fish drives him crazy.

The Piranhacorn knows better.

After all, every time danger comes along, Gunther is always the first one standing between it and his tiny, toothy friend.

Just don't tell Gunther they're best friends.

He'll deny it.


Now it's your turn to bring Gunther to life. Just be careful... if a tiny Piranhacorn follows him home, don't expect Gunther to admit he's happy about it.
