The stitch used is houndstooth stitch.
This pattern provides instructions on how to make the houndstooth stitch in addition to the overall making of the crochet vest top.
The first st is a sc and the last st is a dc
The turning chain does not count as a stitch.
To increase, put 2 stitches in the first st and 2 sts in the last st.
