Description
The Gemsbok Oryx is native to southern Africa. The oryx is a large type of antelope, the Gemsbok being the largest species of oryx. Oryx weigh from 250-500 lb.
Oryx are well adapted to the plains and deserts of southern Africa. They live in medium to large sized herds (sometimes up to 600 animals in a herd) depending on food availability at the time. Oryx migrate to find food and water when resources become scarce.
The oryx population is around 373,000 gemsbok oryx in the wild. They are not considered an endangered population. However, their numbers and conservation is monitored closely, because they serve as a vital food source for many large African predators, including, but not limited to: lions, Hyena's, and African wild dogs. The largest threat to the oryx population is loss of habitat.
