--Bird Lore--

Neona pace-glided around a small, white cloud and landed softly with grace on the cloud as she thought about an upcoming assignment from flight school. A little light, pastel bird flew over to the cloud behind her. Neona said to herself, "This teacher is like a winged pig! He can't even lift his talons above a cloud to save his tailfeathers, and yet he is giving us timed flights around the Wildwinds cloud gatherings to judge us on our flight forms and for what reason. It's not like we will remember how to fly perfectly at every second when we are adults. Ugh This is not fair!" The little pastel bird flew in front of Neona. "Neona, this will be fun! It's a competition. You lo-o-ove competitions." The little bird flapped her wings as she said this. "It doesn't matter to me anymore. I know I will win already but since I have brighter feathers, the judges would disqualify me. I'm tired of doing this every year and anyways, vibrance equals a bad omen among us Skyfeathers. Pastella. I thought I told you this already." Neona sighed and lowered her head. Neona did not know why her feathers meant bad luck but she was told this her entire life. Pastella wrapped her bright pink and yellow wings around Neona to comfort her. "Don't worry now sis, maybe the rules would consider letting you win for the first time. You are the fastest flier I know! You are a winner to me." Pastella hugged Neona and flew toward a larger white cloud to meet some of her friends.
Neona flopped down on the cloud and looked up to the sky to her right. There were columns and rows of different kinds of clouds arranged in the sky. There were many light-colored Skyfeathers above the clouds. Wisps of light, pastel-colored feathers dancing, flying, resting peacefully with their lengthy tailfeathers hanging off the edges of clouds. A beautiful light purple Skyfeather started to sing a melodious tune. More Skyfeathers that were near her joined in harmony with her and each other.
Some of the female Skyfeathers tend to sing to attract males, or to call one of their family members, in this case, this female was singing to attract a male.
As she sang, a brilliant blue Skyfeather swiftly bounded out of the nearest cloud and signaled her to join him in the air as he spun into a flip. The light purple female joined him with pleasure. The two were dancing in the sky, their long tailfeathers lashing the clouds as they twirled.
Neona looked to her left and saw a bunch of younger Skyfeathers playing with a woven feather ball. They were tossing it to each other, catching it swiftly in their talons. Pastella was with them. Neona thought to herself. "I am too old to play this childish game. It does look fun though." Neona flapped her wings and leaped out of the cloud to start flying towards the young Skyfeathers. All of a sudden, a dark shadow swooped out of a large white cloud. The cloud turned grey and started to rain. The dark shadow pinned Neona back down on the cloud that she was laying on. The dark shadow revealed itself. It was a Skyfeather. A greater Skyfeather.
The dark shadow smiled at Neona. Neona squinted and realized that that shadow was One of her best friends from her flight class
"Orinixu! Where have you been? It has been too long since I've seen you." The dark shadow began to reveal colors as he turned towards the sun. His feathers began to shift to a dark blue and green in the light. He grabbed Neona's talon with his and hoisted her up. "Neona, how are you my friend?"
Neona smiled as Orinixu looked at her. "My flight class instructor has given us more of those timed flights again." Orinixu flapped his wings and jumped into the air to land on the other side of Neona. His tail was gracefully flitting the air as he bounded. "Oh Neona, flight class instructors are always like that. You'll learn to find a way to deal with them someday." "Alright Orinixu. Oh by the way, how is your flight class? What are you doing there?" Orinixu looked towards the rain cloud that he created then looked back to Neona. "We were just learning how to conjure rain from the pure clouds. I guess I accidentally conjured rain from that cloud." Neona looked at the dark storm cloud that was spinning and thundering through the air. The light purple Skyfeather flew swiftly over to the rain cloud and flew around it, causing the rain cloud to lighten and stop raining.
Neona wondered why the light Skyfeathers can control the thunderous clouds and make them pure and light again, and how the dark Skyfeathers can turn the light clouds into storm clouds. Neona asked Orinixu if he had wondered the same thing, or if it was just something natural, and had been done for lots of time without any questioning. Orinixu looked confused. "Neona, this is something that has been done for many generations. We might have been doing this since the first creatures set their talons and claws here. Best not to think about it." Neona frowned slightly. She could never control the weather even after she practiced very hard after her flight class. Orinixu was one year older than Neona in Skyfeather years. Pastella was one year younger than her. Both of them could control the clouds just fine, yet Neona was incapable of doing so.
Possibly it was because of Neona's vibrant feathers that stopped her from shifting the clouds. She also realized the darker Skyfeathers have the ability to control the amount of vibrancy in their feathers. They sometimes shift their bodies towards the sun to reveal their feather colors. Likely to attract the attention of each other. Most of the time, the darker Skyfeathers are completely black. All of the darker Skyfeathers are like black dots that fly gently through the skies.
Neona also realized the rising tensions between the darker and the lighter Skyfeathers grew since she was a hatchling. There were more fights over cloud territories than before, there were also less darker Skyfeathers that lived near Neona.
Just as Neona was about to ask Orinixu about her theories, the light purple Skyfeather landed behind Orinixu. She whipped her tail back and forth, her large wings folded into her feathery sides. Orinixu looked behind him and screeched. He jumped into the air, hovering above Neona. The light purple Skyfeather spoke. "What is this Neona! Is this your little stormy malefriend?" "Quit it Lavendra, we both know how slow and sluggish you are when it comes to flying. I'm surprised you even made it over to this cloud without giving up halfway and resting on a cloud. Hah, you'd probably sink through the clouds judging on how fluffy you are. I don't understand why all these males fall in love with you. "
Lavendra looked disgusted. "Ugh be quiet you little vibrant short-tail." Lavendra took off. Orinixu flew back down and landed beside Neona and sighed. "Isn't Lavendra such a vibran- Oh wait I forgot." Orinixu looked at Neona's feathers. Neona frowned and turned her head away. Orinixu flapped his wings. "Well I better be going. Looks like these foulfeathers don't want any dark Skyfeathers around jumbling up their pretty light clouds." Orinixu waved his wing at Neona. Neona waved and reached her talon out to Orinixu as he flew off into the northern storm clouds.
Neona had just realized that there were many unsolved mysteries that had raced over her mind. She was puzzled that the light and dark Skyfeathers were separate and not together. That caused the whole sky to be separated. The sunny side and the rainy side. Neona also wondered why she was so vibrant and not why she lived in the light Skyfeather territory when all of the light Skyfeathers that she knew were very opposed to vibrance. Even the dark Skyfeathers were not fond of vibrant colors. Not one dark Skyfeather that she met was more vibrant than her.
Neona also had no parents at this time. She was being raised by her aunt, the mother of Pastella. Neona wondered if her mother was a light Skyfeather and her father was a dark Skyfeather, causing her feathers to become saturated without the ability to shift them to dark or even to light. Another thought occurred to her. What if she had siblings? What were they like?
These thoughts all ran through her mind. She decided to go to her aunt to ask her. Neona flew swiftly, dodging clouds as she glided through the air. She arrived at her aunt's cloud. "Auntie Coralia, I have a question." Neona looked to her bright-eyed aunt seeking her wisdom. Coralia hesitated at first, then smiled at Neona. "Ah what do you seek my little rainbow." Neona asked her about her parents. Coralia pulled out a little skysilk sheet out of the feathers under her wing. It had the sketch of two Skyfeathers next to each other. One was a brilliant, majestic light pink female with the longest tail she had ever seen. Her crest was styled in a way that seemed noble. The other Skyfeather was a dark, regal Skyfeather with an even longer tail. His crest was towering over his head in a regal state. Neona looked long and hard at the picture, she felt a connection with her parents through the image. She then knew that her assumption was correct. She was a hybrid.
Coralia smiled. "Your parents were once guardians of the eastern Skyfeather lands. They fell in love at a battle over the dominance of territory. Your mother's name was Seraeia and your father's name was Myzsteru. As you know, it is risky to have offspring from a light Skyfeather and a dark Skyfeather. All known hybrid children were considered dead right after they were born. They had you as their offspring right before the battle and you survived luckily. Both of your parents died as soon as they entered the war. After that, all Skyfeathers soon believed that vibrance that could not mask it was a sign of misfortune. Maybe not to the individual Skyfeather itself, but to the ones around it. Your friends here do not care about this misfortune. They know that you are a kind, pleasant little flash of rainbow."
Neona's questions were now answered. She felt pleased now that she knew everything. But why were her closest family and friends hiding these things from her until now
