A chain 3 does count as a double crochet, youll always be working in the chain spaces. Theres a lot of ends to weave in, in this pattern, as you change colours quite often. The first granny square with the snowman on it is the front side of the vest, the other granny square with the purple background with snowflakes on it is the black. The sides of the vest and the straps well be done in white (or whatever colour your border is going to be). If you bring your arm to your side, pretend theres a line that comes up from the crease of your arm, thats where the sides of your granny square should sit.
