This pattern is made in DK weight yarn with a 4.5mm hook. I think a synthetic or plant fiber is best for a coaster, as you will want it to be easy care. This coaster is worked in the round in double crochet, half double crochet, and single crochet stitch. You work increases every round to get it to the proper size while adding a few decorative touches throughout the piece. Gauge is not crucial in such a small piece.

This pattern is written for one size which should be a perfect fit for most mugs. If you find that it is too small/too large for your mug, I encourage you to experiment with another gauge or the number of rounds.
